The dream of owning an 81-acre tree farm in Greewich, N.Y. took a terrible turn this morning towards … NOT HAPPENING!
Woke up to an e-mail from the owner of the tree-studded ridge parcel in Washington County. He said he had a cash offer with closing in 30 days. He asked if I wanted to bid, he would wait for my offer. See, this is how it is when you start talking to people about their land. They love it, they want a buyer who they feel GETS IT about their land.
In this case, the 81 acres had been granted a conservancy easement with the rural upstate N.Y. county. It was basically irrevocable, which meant the property could never be subdivided. That suited me fine, since this brought the price down to about $2,000 an acre AND if I bought it, would never consider subdividing it.
But I am in Seattle. The seller is in Florida. The land is in New York. And I can’t get make an offer.
Talk about crazy, but it HURTS letting this thing go.

If only I had a dollar for every time a buyer missed out on a land opportunity! Sorry to hear. One thing is for sure, it’s not the only piece of dirt that can be bought and I’m sure you will find a better piece. Good luck in your land search!
